Prospect Heights
|
I love my neighborhood - and perhaps people end up at bergenstreet.com because they want some info on the neighborhood. Time to do some listings! I read this in a review of Tom's Diner "Prospect Heights that some in the white ghetto of Park Slope have long considered unfriendly: some parts industrial, some parts boarded up, and most parts African-American." Who cares what people from the "white ghetto" think - this is the friendliest neighborhood I have ever lived in - sometimes too friendly! OK - the neighborhood is no beauty queen but it has what we need and nothing more - minimalist living at its best. I think we only lack a video rental store, okay, maybe we could use a great bakery too.
This is a tiny neighborhood - Boundaries: Atlantic Avenue on the north to Eastern Parkway on the South. Flatbush Avenue on the west to Washington Avenue on the east. See stolen map. Please send me suggestions or updates to this list.
Quite neurotically I have also set up a message board for the neighborhood - so use it! |

Tom's Diner Sterling and Washington Ave. Not open on Sundays or after about 4 pm on any other day. |
Great as a pre-Brooklyn Museum lunch or breakfast. And yes, Suzanne Vega wrote her famous song about this place. (or maybe not! make sure you ask.) |
|
Sweets Village Washington Avenue between St. Marks and Prospect Streets - open for breakfast, lunch and evening coffee. |
The super nice folks at Sweets Village also want to hook you up with Jazz, poetry and art - so stop by and ask! | |

Freddy's Bar 6th Ave. and Dean Street around the corner from the Police station if you need a drink after your visit to the slammer. |
Live music and friendly people 7 days a week. There is also a scrabble board but I wouldn't recommend running around the bar challenging people to a game. |
|
|
O'Conner's Bar On 5th Ave between Bergen and Dean Streets. Not technically in Prospect Heights but it seems more like a Prospect Height kinda place. |
The only other place where Slopers and Heighters can be seen drinking in the same place.

|
Soda Bar Between Prospect & St. Marks - a friendly little watering hole with a happy hour. |
I've been in twice - one time alone and met the whole bar on a sleepy evening and the second time managed to drop in on 80's night which was... well, I hardly have the words to describe how much I loathed/loved those years. |
